I woke up at 4:00 this morning with my dog/child sitting next to my bed quietly staring at me. How can anyone not like dogs? Blows my mind.
Made it to the Y nice and early! Got a quick workout in. Sat in the steam room for a bit and took my time getting ready in the silent, ever so secret family locker room. Let me tell you that place is VIP in the mornings because no one thinks about using it. Plu, they are freshly cleaned from the night before.
Things are feeling like they are getting back to normal. I think the whole key is the workout. Once I put the time in to work out it waterfalls into every other facet of my life. My eating habits just fall back into place and I'm more organized at work even. I just have to keep going. I'm thinking about setting up an appointment with a therapist. I have never been able to just keep steady with my weight. I'm either losing or gaining. nothing in between. Thank God the band helped me not gain as much as I would have. But I can't keep treating my body like this. So we'll see. I keep saying I'd like to make an appointment and always mean to look into what coverage we have for it and then I never do.
On a different note, I have to say I sure have missed all of the banded bloggers out there. It's so good to see how far everyone has come and it's really inspiring! I'm still catching up on blogs so if you get 7 comments from me in 1 day you'll know why :)

Embarassing Moments and More Vodoo
Let's talk about accountability. In January, MS and I joined Planet Fitness because they had the $99 for a whole year deal and I wasn't so sure I was going to stick with a gym plan at that time. I still wanted to take other classes etc, so I also took advantage of a benefit that is offered by my company. They pay $40 towards a gym membership at the YMCA or Lifetime Fitness every month and the remainder gets taken out of my check. Well Lifetime is super expensive, but with the Y membership costs me $1.80 and it's taken out of every paycheck. Not bad, $43 out of pocket for the entire year. In return, I have to go to the gym at least 10 times in a 3 month rolling period.
I knew I hadn't gone to the gym a whole lot in the past three months, but oops. I really hadn't been going, because yesterday I get an email from one of our HR people that says this:
I knew I hadn't gone to the gym a whole lot in the past three months, but oops. I really hadn't been going, because yesterday I get an email from one of our HR people that says this:
Hi!
Just wanted to send a friendly reminder about the gym
subsidy. You are doing a great job! Keep up the good work by going to the gym
at least four times in (month). You can definitely do that!!!
June: 1
July: 1
August: 1
Goal for Sept: 4+
OMG. How embarassing is that? I only went to the gym 3 times in 3 months? That can't even be possible. I used to go almost 9 times a week! Well, I've already been 3 times this month and I would like to just knock out the 10 required visits right away so I don't have to worry about it! Plus, if I'm not working out, I'm not losing weight. Plain and simple.
Now, onto Vodoo. Last night after the gym, I was craving a fruit smoothie for some reason. So we stopped at the grocery store and I bought everything that i needed for this Green Cleansing Smoothie I found on pinterest. http://www.fitsugar.com/Kimberly-Snyders-Green-Smoothie-Recipe-Weight-Loss-18356998 I thought it was delicious and I could tell this morning that it cleanses like it says it will! The only problem is that is makes an entire blender full of smoothie, at least 3-4 servings. I put the remaining shake in an airtight container and refridgerated it over night.
This morning I took it to work, shook it up and poured about 1 cup of it in my little blender, added vanilla bean torte protein powder, a splash of almond milk and some coconut oil to make it more of a meal. I think it's just delicious. Try it out if you're into vodoo!

Refocused
Woah the first week of May is over. What in the world? Today I hit a big one.. the big Seven.Zero. Isn't that equivalent to a whole 7 or 8 year old kid? A husky one, even?
It really makes me feel good but I had an epiphany tonight. A few days before my surgery I saw a user on lapbandtalk.com that had lost 96 lbs in 6 months. I asked her what she had done and she explained that she works out for at least 45 minutes a day. She said she started walking as soon as she could and she kept working out harder and harder each time. That was when it really clicked for me and that's what inspired me to start walking right away. I set that goal to do exactly what she did.
So periodically I check up on her on lapbandtalk.com to see how much more weight she has lost. She has a newer picture and she's totally skinny. She has now lost 125 lbs and she's just a little more than a month away from her 1 year bandiversary.
Coincidentally, I am a little more than 1 month away from my 6 month bandiversary and I'm within reaching distance to the goal I set for myself right before I had surgery. It's going to take some serious discipline and I'm going to have to get back to working my ass off in the gym. But I really owe it to myself to accomplish this goal.
The past few days have been great food wise. I've really been good. I have been working out very hard, I just don't do it as much as I used to. So I'm getting up and going to the gym tomorrow for a hardcore workout.
I want to be somewhere in the -90's by my birthday which is 3 days after my 6 mo bandiversary. This is going to be tough, but it's possible. As friends, if you hear me wavering or getting whiny will you please remind me to focus on this goal? I need to do this!

What Day is It?
I have so many things to tell! I'll just bullet them out.
- Yesterday I went to a Pure Barre class with my girlfriends and I can't tell you how amazing it was. I could barely do what the instructor was doing, but today every single muscle in my body has been aching. It's like the muscles you want to ache, but can never get them on your own. It was crazy.
Pure Barre, however, is kind of one of those desperate housewife type places for bitches that have someone else to pay the bills if you know what i mean (if you're one, trust me, I mean bitch in the most admirable sense, I'm totally jealous of your lifestyle). So to join this place It's $150 a MONTH and the last class of the day is at like 5:30 at night. You can, however, buy single classes which are $20 a piece.
Honestly, down the road, I could possibly consider it. It was that good. If I could do it once a week I'd probably be shredded.
Oh yeah, and everyone who goes, wears the cutest lululemon workout gear and accessorizes workout diamonds. Big .. effing.. diamonds.
- As a nice follow up to that body wrecking work out, MS and I went to Bosu tonight. I was so excited that he decided to go with me. He kept saying "This dude is the devil"
Class was ridic. The instructor was doing high knees while running in circles, and his uhh, package, kept jumping out of his little shorts. Why is it so hard to look away in those situations? I was jumping so hard I felt like my port was going to bust loose at any second. My fat was just bouncing up and down, there were a million things to look at, but every time he jumped extra hard my head was like "AHHHH BALLS" and my eyes just shot there. I kept thinking DON'T LOOK DON'T LOOK. It was impossible.
I hope MS keeps going with me. It was fun besides the balls part.
- Soooo this weekend my girlfriends and I entered a contest for $1000 worth of sunglasses... Currently I'm winning, would you guys vote for me? Here's the link: http://bit.ly/IAh3QL
- MS made some chicken from a pinterest recipe that I pinned a while back and it was TO DIE FOR! I'll post that here
- I think that's it for now! Hope everyone has a great week!!!

More Bosu!
Tonight as I was holding weights over my head, standing on a squishy half ball, shaking to keep my balance, and shaking to keep holding up the weights for longer, the instructor said, "Who's ever lost 10 lbs? Imagine these weights as the 10 extra lbs you were carrying around." I wanted to scream "I LOST 60!!" but I kept it in and had a celebration in my head and then I fell off the Bosu. Ha!
After my second Bosu class, I am totally addicted. This one had a different instructor that has a completely different style but I loved him too. So, Monday nights will be balls to the walls crazy can hardly keep up Bosu/Kickboxing/Toning and Wednesday nights will be a little calmer, but just as hard bosu cardio and toning with weights. I'm so flippin excited because I can tell that this is what will blast me into the second phase of my weight loss. I could see myself in the mirror tonight doing all these crazy jumping and toning moves and I was so grossed out by how big I looked. Seeing that twice a week is really going to help keep me in line!

Bosu / Kickboxing / Toning
Woah. I just got done with the craziest fitness class I have ever taken in my life. It was a combination of cardio and toning all on a bosu balance trainer. I got the ugly red workout face afterwards. I realized that I've been working out hard enough to get where I am, but to get to where I want to go, I'm going to have to start working out harder!Right now they only offer this class on Monday nights, and there is another similar one on wednesdays. So I'm going to put those into regular rotation.
Every muscle in my body is still shaky and I'll probably feel like a mess tomorrow but it was worth it

Couch to 5K
MS and I started couch to 5K today. I have mixed feelings about it. I hate running so much I could spit. Buuutt I also felt that way about elliptical machines a measly 3 months ago.
Today there was a 5K in the DC area sponsored by Chris 4 Life Colon Cancer Foundation and there was a HUGE team running in my friend's honor. I really wish i could have been part of it so I'm promising myself that I'll do it next march. I think it might have been another one of those winks from God that my husband announced he was going to start couch to 5K today on the same day of the race.
So... it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. It's a 30 minute work out 5 minute warm up walk, 1 minute of jogging, 1 minute of walking on and off and then there is a 5 minute cool down walk.
So if you break it down it is only 10 minutes of jogging and 20 minutes of walking. Not horrible.
I'll do that 2 more times this week and then it increases a little bit every week for 9 weeks. MS found a 5K that we both want to run in Detroit in August. Ugh, I just can't even imagine running for 3 miles straight. yikes.

Back to Life
Hi!! I just read about 15 blogs! I've missed catching up with everyone so much.
Wednesday afternoon I made it back from my work conference that was out of control and has kept me away for a little while. I work for a really great technology company and every year we hold a user conference. The cool thing is that the software that we sell helps people become more efficient and have a better handle on things, which means in this economy, business is thriving. This year we had record breaking attendance. It was really great. I overindulged on the Cabernet a few nights, but I was up and raring to go all day every day. I'm still pretty worn out from the whole thing!
On this trip, I was so excited to see that the resort we stayed at had an amazing fitness center with 5 or 6 Octane 4600 elliptical machines. I worked out with one of my roommate's 3 days out of the 5 which was great. If you ever see one of these just try it. You'll swear at it, but then all of a sudden you get addicted. It's my absolute favorite machine to work out on. I've been using it for over 2 months now, and I am still getting a kick ass work out on level 1. There is also a program called X-trainer and it gives you different speeds and techniques for interval training. It is seriously awesome.
Anyways - Even though one of the days I ate an oatmeal pie and a bag of lays for lunch (oops)I still thought I would drop some serious weight on this trip. I barely ate, I just didn't have a whole lot of choices when I did. Well. I got on the scale the morning after I returned and it said I gained 6 POUNDS!! WWHHAA?!! Not even possible.
I figured it was lots of fluid and it definitely was. I went on a liquid diet and the scale today said I had only gained 2 lbs. I would imagine that will be gone tomorrow so I'm not overly concerned.
I have however, been at the same weight for about 2 weeks now, so I'm going to have to come up with something to kick start my metabolism back up. I'll work on it. I can't wait to blow past 60 lbs. haha I'm sick of that number!
I also have one other little struggle going on now and I'm a little bit upset about it. Just as my dietitian said, it has been 3 months since surgery and my hair is really coming out.
The dietitian said that for some reason, 3 months after a surgery like this, your body says, "woah something big happened" and it releases some hair. She said I can take biotin but there's not proof that it will help.
I luckily have tons of hair. But it's starting to hurt my soul a little bit every time I comb my hair out after the shower. It's not coming out in chunks, just strands, but the strands come out by the handful after a shower. It's gotten to the point that I comb my hair out while I'm in the shower at the gym and I wrap the hair up in some paper towel and throw it away. It's too embarrassing to comb it out in the open.
I'm going to email my dietitian and see if she'll give me any other guidelines to help. I'm fearing she might just tell me to ride it out and see what happens. I'll just keep praying that it stops. please please please stop!

Work Out Buddies
Really loved my second week of beginner's yoga at the Y. I felt especially fat today because this week's teacher was even more hard core than last week's. That's ok I'll get there, though.
I'm losing my work out drive, so I'm doing everything in my power to just keep on keeping on. Thursday was my only full day off this week, and I did take off my Friday morning work out time. This is where a support system (work out buddies from work and my husband) are clutch!!
Up until this point I didn't need buddies; I was just going on sheer determination. But the buddies have been there all along and there is no way I could just quit all together which is a blessing! If I were doing this by myself I think next week (myrtle beach) would be the death of my work out routine.
No worries, I'm not going back to my old habits. But if you find yourself in the situation I'm in right now, find yourself some buddies who won't quit!

Vacation and Second Fill!
Vacation was wonderful! My sister and I have been taking trips to Disney for a long time and we just had the best group of people this time. My husband was so excited to be there and loves hitting every ride. My sister brought her hilarious friend that I just adored. We all had a really great time.
About 2 days before we left, I knew I needed a fill something fierce but I wasn't scheduled to go in until a week later (which was today) I had perfect restriction for the entire month and then BAM flood gates opened.
At first MS and I shared meals at the parks. Even half of the meals were way more than what we normally ate but we were ok with that. Well of course, sharing meals with someone gets old after a while. You don't always want the same things so towards the end we started ordering on our own.
We ate way too much. I started feeling guilty on one of our last nights when I ordered a lobster roll. I planned on eating the lobster salad with a fork and leaving the bread. But after my first bite of the super soft bread going down with no problem, it was very hard to stop.
The good news is, we ate like crap, but we walked about 50 miles over the entire week, so I came back and lost 1 lb.
It's crazy to me that you have to walk THAT much just to burn what we ate. I will say that even though I ate a lot, I still didn't eat half as much as I have on past trips!
The good news is that we were both scheduled for our 2nd fills today! We both were ready for her to shut it down! If you are a normal reader I"m sure you remember my first drama filled adjustment.
Well today, MS went first and he reported back that he didn't pass out and everything went fine. I took the atavan pill 30 minutes before I went to the doctor's office as directed. When I got there, she told me that MS had done great, and she actually had done quite a bit of research after our last visits to better understand our reaction the last time (When doctors say things like that I instantly fall in love. I have so much respect for a doctor that does continuous research and doesn't just sit on his/her heels acting like he/she is the end all be all.)
Anyways - she explained that there are nerves that go from our brains down and are on each side of our stomach. We both have an issue of sensitivity with that nerve. Some people don't have that issue, some people do. For me, when she fills my band, that nerve gets aggravated and causes me to pass out.
So today, I was standing up, she located the port with the fluoroscope and marked it on my belly. She inserted the needle and that hurt a little more than last time. But still no big deal.
As soon as she started filling the band I had the same feeling as last time, but I remained in control and didn't panic. I told her I was getting light headed but I was still ok, she acknowledged that I was starting to lose color but she kept going. Every few seconds I told her how I was feeling and then she was done.
She had me lie down and she tilted the table back. As soon as I laid down I was fine. I never actually passed out this time so I recovered much quicker.
She explained that next time she'll fill the band in even smaller increments until we can get it so the nerve doesn't react. I'm ok with the fact that this is just something I'll have to deal with on a monthly basis.
She said that she'd see me in a month and I explained what happened last week (flood gates) and she said it is perfectly ok for me to come in a week early if I'd like. Because she does this with the fluoroscope every time she will never over fill me and cause issues.
If you have not had this surgery yet and are just in the research phase I would highly recommend choosing a doctor that uses a Fluoroscope for every fill. It gives the doctor the ability to see the fill and give you perfect restriction every month. From what I've read, it hurts a lot less because the doctor doesn't have to dig around for the port. Also, everyone has talked about finding the green zone and how hard it is to get there. I believe I was in the green zone for 3 full weeks last month and I'm positive that it was because of the fluoroscope.
Well, I should get back to work. I'm a little tired from that atavan pill, but I have lots to do today. I really missed everyone while I was on vacation and I can't wait to catch up on all of your blogs!

MyFitnessPal.com
Yesterday, on Lapbandtalk.com, I asked what the best web based food tracker was and I had two main responses. Myfitnesspal.com and Sparkpeople. Being the serial dieter that I have been, spark people is old news to me. But MyFitnessPal.... now this is something to write about.
Pros: The mobile app is awesome. I can read a bar code on anything I'm eating and it will add the nutritional information for me. No bar code? The database is crazy. I mean they even have every kind of kroger brand cheese the place sells.
You can track your food and fitness. I still like having Endomondo for the GPS in case I walk outside.
At the end of each day it tells you your calorie count and gives you a message that says something like "if every day were like today you'll weigh XYZ by this date" I think that's cool
Cons: It doesn't let you track what you want to track like Spark People. For instance, I want to see how much protein I've had on my phone. But it only shows calories. I have to log into the website to check my protein.
On that same note, Myfitnesspal figures out what calories I need. My nutritionist told me to try for 800 a day but not to worry so much about that yet, and just too focus on getting protein from real food. Myfitnesspal says I need 1400+ calories and keeps giving me a warning for eating too little. I think it would be cool if these sites let you pick your weight loss method.
All in all I'd say it's pretty cool!!

Is this Really My Life?
I am officially a member of 2 gyms. WTF? Never in my life would I have ever thought I'd see this day. Don't get my wrong I absolutely love working out, but for whatever reason I have a history of working out for a few weeks and then never going back.
Honestly though, the reason I've decided to do this will make sense when I explain it. I work for an awesome company. They offer a wellness plan and as long as we as employees commit to visiting the gym 10 times over a 3 month period the company will subsidize gym memberships. It just so happens that I can join a group of YMCA's for $4 a month that automatically deducted from my paycheck. We didn't look to this option first because it was still close to $50 a month for MS.
This is perfect for me, because the YMCA offers hundreds of fitness classes every week and that is where Planet Fitness is a bit weak. MS and I can go together to planet fitness to work out for the rest of the year but if I feel like going to a Zumba, Yoga or spinning class first thing Saturday morning I can. In fact I have to go to at least 10 of them every quarter!
The group of people that I work with is super close, we all get along really well and have a blast together. There is a small group of us that have committed to each other that we'll be meeting at the YMCA before work 2 days a week. If someone doesn't show we'll give each other hell about it. I'm going to curse myself when I actually get up and go, but it will be worth it when I fit into a smaller pair of jeans.
All that being said. If anyone ever tells me that I took the easy way out with this lap band, I'll probably punch them in the face....and it will probably hurt because I'll be ripped.

Skinny Dance!
I had to get into work super early this morning so I had the pleasure of visiting with MS while getting ready instead of snoozin. He's about a day behind me with the cold so he was still feeling pretty bad. But ...........that didn't stop us from doing the skinny dance! As of today, 18 days post op, MS has lost 36 lbs. and I have lost 27 Big Ones!!!
Can you believe it?! I can't! Now that we've slowly worked our way up to eating about 4 oz with every meal I feel like the weight is really coming off :)
I can't wait to celebrate with a little time at the gym or a walk outside tonight!

Listening to My Body - Protein
At our pre-op appointment on December 8th, the nurse went over how we were to drink our protein and hydration fluids after the surgery. She explained to us that Protein was the most important thing for us to get down post-op because it would be the only thing giving us energy and helping us heal.
Since the surgery, each of us has consumed the proper amount of protein we were told to and some days we've had more. This past week I settled into a nice routine. Every day I'll drink about 58 grams of protein in my morning shake. I'll go for a 1.5 - 2 mile walk at 11:30 and I don't even feel hungry until about 3:00 pm. I'll eat something then (with more protein, because I don't want a repeat of that super hungry day) and then I'll eat dinner around 6:00 with another walk somewhere in there.
Well, yesterday I deviated from that routine and I paid for it dearly. Since we are transitioning to soft foods now, MS and decided to just have a slim fast shake (20 grams of protein) and then go to the gym. I felt pretty tired after the gym and decided to eat some salmon salad for lunch. I mixed 2 oz of salmon with a touch of mayo, dill and lemon. I started by eating too fast, and I knew it was happening. I told myself to slow down and when i didn't, I just got up and walked away from the table for a while. That really screwed me up because I was full and had only eaten less than 1 oz of salmon which is only 8.5 grams of protein. It was close to 1:00 at that point and I had only consumed 28.5 grams of protein and 178 calories for the whole day. Needless to say, I started to feel pretty icky.
We went on a little shopping trip until about 5:00 or so. It felt like 8:00. Just as I was about to say, "I think I'm going to go to bed." I asked MS what time it was, and he said 6:00. What the heck? I continued to feel worse. As I sat there I started to get agitated and actually a little angry. I didn't have the brain power to read anything let alone blog about anything. I knew that wasn't like me at all. That scene from Steel Magnolias where Julia Roberts flips shit because of her blood sugar flashed in my head and I definitely knew I needed to do something. MS got up and made me a full protein shake and very quickly after I drank that I started to feel a lot better. Within an hour I felt good enough to write 3 or 4 posts and we stayed up past midnight. How crazy!
When you only have so much room in that little pouch above your stomach you have to put the right things in your body and you have to eat very slowly. I can see why people have issues with this surgery if they are not getting enough protein. I don't want to feel the way I did yesterday ever again. So if you are getting banded and you take anything from this blog, please let it be that you get enough protein every single day!

Great Deal at Planet Fitness
We joined Planet Fitness today because they have an amazing deal going on right now - $99 for a whole year. We shopped around for a bit and that was the absolute best deal anywhere around. I know they have quite a few locations across the country, so hopefully some of you can take advantage of it as well.
We walked for a little over 30 minutes on the treadmills. We don't go back to see our surgeon until Jan 17, so we're not going to do anything but walk until then. Once he gives us the ok to start working out a little harder we both plan on doing more strength training.
Since I've been yo-yo dieting my whole life, I'm used to seeing my body lose weight. Unfortunately I'm noticing my skin seems a little looser this time around, so I want to do anything I can to prevent extra skin. I've read that strength training helps with the look of loose skin and I'm also going to use lots of moisturizer with Vitamin E and/or coco butter. If anyone out there has tips, please share!
Happy losing, my friends!

Went on an Awesome Walk Today!
It was a beautiful 60 degree day today and the sun was shining. I had to turn down an invitation to go out to lunch with some girlfriends today, but I don't feel bad about it at all. I used to go out to grab something for lunch almost every day. Hopefully the money I save will fund a fab new wardrobe! Yesterday I downloaded this rad app on my phone to help track my workouts. This version is free, but the pro version is only 2.99 and might be a fun tool to have later.
You have to register for an account or you can log in via Facebook. To give you an accurate calorie count you have to enter your weight.
The pic on the left is what the screen looks like when you start. You pick your workout type and just hit the start button.

| My Workout 12/28/11 |
I felt really good walking today. I was pushing myself but also taking care that I didn't over do it. I never felt bad throughout the walk at all.
I was a little hungrier today than I've been since the band. I ate my 2 oz of soup at around 2:00 and I had 2 oz of applesauce around 4:00
Onto other great news ... my husband (MS) told me today that he has lost 27 lbs!!!!! Holy crap!
I'm still at the 20 lb mark, so I'm hoping my workouts will help me with pushing through onto the 30 lb mark. I would really like to hit -30 by the time we go in for our 21 day check up with our doctor. Wish me Luck!
